PPO is developing a new method for the detection of fruit tree cancer (Nectria galligena) in graft wood. This annual wood is used for the reproduction of trees.

Via a DNA test it is already possible to detect fruit tree cancer in branches on which this is already visible. PPO will be refining this test to enable detection of any fruit tree cancer in branches on which it is not yet visible. It will also be attempted to predict the degree of fruit tree cancer.

This DNA test enables fruit growers to test grafting wood before use. This results in less loss and lower disease pressure in the nursery and further down the chain.
