Focus of research
Sustainable tree cultivation, organic as well as integrated, is developing rapidly. Cultivation bottlenecks show up in the field-scale growing systems set up at various research locations. PPO’s Nursery Stock Research Unit focuses directly on these developments and tries to find solutions in order to provide farmers with sustainable and profitable farm management systems, also in the future.
To reduce the amount of waste, we focus on new products for the nursery sector such as degradable pots and degradable tying materials.

Example of innovative research:

Healthy plants in a healthy environment can be achieved by looking for new, safe pesticides with safe application techniques. This makes it possible to use less product and to reduce emission. This is supported by the selection of less disease-prone crops and the development of optimum cultivation conditions.

PPO conducts research for the sector and for the government. PPO’s strength is a multi-faceted approach of research questions in fields such as crop protection, fertilization, efficacy research, multifunctional agriculture, sustainable production, farm management systems, weed control, storage, quality, labor, etc. We conduct our research in close collaboration with other agricultural and horticultural organizations.
Knowledge transfer is part all our research projects. Before a project is started we discuss the form of the output with the customer.

Growing crops without soil is better for the environment

Broccoli, strawberries, summer flowers, flower bulbs and trees do not need soil to grow. They can also be grown in water or on substrate, and that is better for the environment. However, the costs are too high for many crops. Researchers from Wageningen UR and Proeftuin Zwaagdijk (Agricultural Research Centre) are trying to do something about this.
