Root pruning inhibits the growth of pear trees and yields the best fruits. This is the outcome of experiments by PPO Fruit in Randwijk. This method offers a good alternative for the growth inhibitor CCC, which caused problems in pear growing in 2000, when it left too much residue in the fruit.
Between 2004 and 2008 an experiment has been carried out with different treatments for growth inhibition with Conférence on Quince MC with interstock Doyenné du Comice in V hedge.
The scientists investigated six methods with root pruning and sawing into the stem, and controlled water application. Results showed that root pruning resulted in the least variation in fruit quality. Additional sprays with Regalis and product E hardly had an effect.
