Many farmers in the New Member States are still badly informed on the International and European trade standards on product quality and food safety. Applied Plant research has developed two training manuals for farmers who want to gain more information on trading on the European or International market place.
The development of the manuals was done in close co-operation with farmers and institutes from the New Member States. One manual is on Quality Standards (EU Marketing Standards) and one manual on Eurep-GAP certification. The Training manual on Eurep-GAP also highlights some of the bottlenecks farmers in New Member States face while implementing Eurep-GAP.
The international trade requirements are of growing concern to farmers in New Member States. The rise of supermarket share in retail, results in a growing demand for Eurep-GAP certified products. International trade requires knowledge on quality standards. Because farmers are more often confronted with these requirements, the need for information on quality standards and Eurep-GAP is growing.
The Training Manual of the Qualiman project were designed to inform farmers on quality standards and Eurep-GAP. First step in the process was to determine the bottlenecks in the supply chain in close co-operation with institutes from the New Member States. After this step the next activity was develop both manuals to supply sufficient information to farmers. The manuals are tested and judged by farmers from the New Member States.
