Applied Plant Research (PPO) in Randwijk will in the coming years investigate whether a profitable market chain can be set up for the Santana apple for people with an apple allergy. Two per cent of the population of the Netherlands suffers from this form of allergy.
A study by Groningen Universitair Medisch Centrum among fifteen people with apple allergy has shown that half of these people show no or hardly allergenic reaction when eating Santana. In the project ‘De smaak van morgen’ (Tomorrow’s Taste) PPO will be investigating how production and marketing of Santana can be organized. This variety, developed by Plant Research International (PRI), has another advantage: it can be grown in a very environmentally friendly fashion.
